Reading Reflection 3

I read Ray Kroc's Grinding It Out: The Making of McDonald's because I was interested in how McDonalds was created since it's such a huge success today. What surprised me was how many people did not see his vision like he did. I was impressed by how much determination he had in convincing people to work with him or buy what he was selling. I did not like how much he had to sacrifice for his dream because I am a firm believer in not putting work first. He definitely face a lot of failure and roadblocks to success. He continually persevered and worked to succeed which makes McDonalds an even more impressive entrepreneurship story. Ray was very competent at being a salesman. He could sell absolutely anything and that's what made him such a success. His business would never have been so successful had he not been able to sell as well as he could. There wasn't anything really confusing to me since it was a straightforward biography.

My two questions would be:

1. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start there own business, do you have any tips for selling something people might not want?

2. Do you have any advice for someone who will be the executive of their own business?

I think he believes hard work is the way to get things done. He worked hard quite literally until he died. He never retired and that shows a huge amount of dedication to what he was doing.

  1. I read the same book as you for this reading reflection. I also thought it was crazy how committed he was to business and work and pointed out that even though being successful is important I do not think it is worth running personal relationships. I think he is a good role model if you take his work ethic and recreate it in your own way to make time for the important people in your life.

  2. Great job on your blog post. The book that you read "Grinding It Out: The Making of McDonald's" sounds like an interesting read. I think I am going to add it to my list of books that I plan on reading in the future. It is incredible to me that someone can come up with an idea, being McDonalds in this case, and turn that simple idea into the world's largest franchise business. Ray Kroc literally created an enterprise based on simplifying the restaurant business and creating a fast and affordable place for people to eat. I too would like to know the answers to the questions that you proposed to him.
