Celebrating Failure

This semester I failed at getting multiple internship opportunities. I went to career showcase and got interviews with 3 companies. Through these interviews I failed at 2 of them. I also submitted many online applications where my resume didn't even make it past screening and I didn't get interviews. This was very hard because so much time and energy goes into prepping for interviews. I really thought I nailed the interviews and the week of waiting to hear if you made it for a second round really built up the suspense. Since my anticipation was so high, it was extra hard to hear that I did not make it for a second round interview. I learned from these failures that it's not that you aren't good enough for a company, it's that you just might not be the best fit. I also learned to not set my expectations too high, usually about 10% of interviews are successful so receiving an offer from 1/3 was perfectly normal. I went a lot of years without being rejected or failing at things. I was lucky enough to succeed in almost anything if I really set my mind to it and tried hard. I don't like failure and refuse to accept it most of the time. This experience of trying my best and still being rejected taught me to handle that and learn from it. I know now that sometimes your best isn't enough but that's not a bad thing it just means you need to find something else to succeed in. I think if I were to be rejected from job offers in the future I would be much more level headed about it. This class taught me that entrepreneurship entails a lot of failure and correction. This has made failure a more acceptable option to me. After this class I can now see failure as an okay thing to do as long as you correct and keep moving forward.

  1. I also wrote this assignment about not having an internship yet. I also had an interview that I thought went really well. I left and thought there was no way I didn’t get a second opportunity with the company. I waited patiently for two weeks to hear that they were moving on with other candidates. It was hard to get this news but it also motivated me to do better in the future and correct what mistakes I could find.

  2. Great job on your post, you perfectly described a situation where you failed, and were able to learn from your experience. I also agree that finding internships is hard and daunting experience but once you succeed it makes it all worthwhile. I agree with your take that the experience of being rejected only helps you be able to handle it in the future.
