Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
| Interview 1&2: These interviews were with two PACE students at the University of Florida. I asked both of them about this issue and if they would consider it a problem. The first student understands that a lot of people probably do think this is an issue but he personally doesn't mind. When I asked why he didn't think this was an issue he said that since he is PACE all of his classes are online. Even though he lives close to campus and is technically a UF student he is never on campus walking to and from class. The second student I interviewed works in an office 5 days a week and finishes his course work when he gets home or on the weekends in his apartment or at his friends apartment. If he does go on campus it's to use the facilities at SW Rec center and he drives and parks right out front. For him this addition would not impact him in the slightest and he would not like to have to pay for them in his tuition since only active students on campus will benefit, even though UF has tons of off campus students. Interview 3&4: For these interviews I talked to two different maintenance workers for UF. The first thinks this is a good idea for the students and he would also like them since he frequently has to walk between buildings when he's working. He gets sweaty since he's doing manual labor most of the time anyway so he doesn't think it would really make a difference for him. He thought that UF might not be inclined to install them since they would have to not only buy the fans but also pay for workers to install them throughout campus which would take away their time from other projects and maintenance needs. The second one thought this was a good idea, however, he has a golf cart that he can take around so for him it wouldn't make a difference. Interview 5: I interviewed a professor about her thoughts on having fans around campus. She thinks that they're unnecessary because UF already provides a bus service for free to students. As a professor, she gets to park on campus and never has an issue parking too far from her class. She think's the solar powered fans would be an eyesore on campus as well. Who: The people who would fall outside the boundary would be those who don't need to walk across campus or have other more convenient ways of transport. They would be anyone with on campus parking, those who don't need to come onto campus, or anyone who lives directly next to a bus stop and gets off at a stop exactly where their destination is. What: The differentiating factor between the need for fans to cool you down as you walk around campus and needing other forms of transportation would be when people stop enjoying walking. The issue that arises for my solution isn't that people don't like walking the distances across campus, it's that they don't like the result of being sweaty when they arrive to class. If people just don't like to walk that far then their need becomes more of a transportation based need not a temperature based need. Why: The underlying cause of the outsider's needs vs the insider's needs is the same in that IF the outsiders were to walk across campus they would also have the same need. The outsider's in this situation simply don't have this need as they have different ways of getting around campus or they don't have to get around campus at all.

It is kind of funny that you had an interviewer say what I said in my comment on your post for assignment 8. I think these interviews were very beneficial in giving some of the flaws of the idea some light. I too had to realize that my product was not perfect and does not work for all the people who I thought were in my target consumer. Even though it won’t work for everybody does not mean that it will not be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteWhen I reviewed the first part of your hypothesis, I did not consider that many schools are moving away from the classroom setting and into online classes. For example, with this class, I do not need to take a bus and can just watch the lectures and do assignments in my living room! Although the transition to online classes is occurring, I still believe that enough students walk around campus, and even online students walk to the library and spend some time on campus, for your opportunity to still exist.
ReplyDeleteYour formatting was great it made it easy for the reader to follow along. I like the different kinds of people you interviewed from students to teachers to maintenance personal, the vast range of opinions gave me more insight to the opportunity's feasibility. Also good job on your table and explaining who was outside of the boundary. Overall Excellent Job.
