Solving the Problem
My problem was that students get incredibly hot and sweaty when they're trying to go to class or walk anywhere on campus. This is an opportunity around any college campus, especially in the South, as many college's are large and require a lot of time walking outside from building to building or from a students home to class. Due to the wide audience of people affected by this issue, I saw it as a great opportunity. The service I came up with would be putting solar powered fans and potentially misters on already existing light-posts/stoplights around campus. This would give students somewhat regular opportunity for a breeze and a little mist to cool off on their way to their destination. They would be solar powered as to not increase the electricity budget of the university. This makes them very cost efficient and after the initial purchase requiring very little money to upkeep. Since they would be so cheap to operate, the marginal utility that the students would gain from enjoying their walk around campus would be more than the cost of operating them in the long run. This could also encourage more students to walk around campus which is always a healthier option than taking a bus or scooting. My target audience for this product would be universities as a whole that would buy these fans in bulk to install around their entire campus.

I think this opportunity is a very interesting one because it will not cost a lot to operate these fans and misters but I am curious how much installation and buying them would cost? I’m sure the University could include the costs in some of the tuition of the students. But this would be very beneficial because on hot summer days here in Gainesville it is inevitable that you are drenched by the time you get to class.
ReplyDeleteI can see the need for the opportunity you proposed because I often have to walk from downtown to campus. Having these fans/misters would greatly benefit students and making them solar powered would significantly cut down on costs. I also thought it was a great point you made about how if these fans were to be installed, it would promote students to walk around campus.
ReplyDeleteI can contest that by the time I arrive at my class, I am drenched with sweat from my walk. I believe that this is an opportunity need that students all around UF and the rest of Florida in general share. It would be nice if your idea was effective at solving, or even just helping reduce sweating while walking to class at the least.
ReplyDeleteI like this idea a lot, especially considering the fans will be powered using solar panels. if it were powered using any other power source, I could see this idea being too costly and much more of a burden on campus staff. I also think It would give the campus a unique look that I think would be cool especially when you’re walking to class.
